Induction and Clinical Mentorship: Supporting Your Transition into General Practice in Ireland
Starting a new role in a new healthcare system can be both exciting and challenging. At Locumotion, we understand that a successful transition requires more than simply securing the right position. That's why we work closely with Centric Health to ensure GPs relocating to Ireland are supported from their very first day in practice.
All doctors placed into Centric Health practices through Locumotion benefit from a comprehensive induction and mentorship programme designed to help them settle confidently into Irish general practice and build a strong foundation for long-term professional success.
A Comprehensive Introduction to Irish General Practice
Before beginning their local practice induction, all new doctors attend a dedicated one-day in-house induction programme delivered by two experienced GPs currently working within Centric Health.
The programme is specifically designed to provide doctors with an understanding of the Irish healthcare landscape and to introduce the systems, resources, and tools used in everyday practice.
This induction helps bridge the gap between healthcare systems and ensures doctors feel prepared, informed, and supported as they begin their new role.
What Does the Induction Programme Cover?
The induction programme includes:
- Key differences in Irish healthcare legislation and regulations
- An overview of the Health Service Executive (HSE) and how the system operates
- Training on Socrates, the clinical software used across Centric Health practices
- Guidance on accessing local clinical resources and support materials
- Access to and navigation of the Irish Medical Formulary
- Reviews of current clinical hot topics and best-practice updates
Following the central induction programme, doctors then complete a local practice induction where they receive guidance on practice-specific policies, procedures, workflows, and local protocols.
Together, these inductions provide a strong foundation for success in Irish general practice.
Ongoing Support Through Clinical Mentorship
At Centric Health, support extends well beyond induction day.
As part of the onboarding process, every new doctor is introduced to the Clinical Mentorship Programme, providing access to experienced GP mentors who offer guidance throughout the transition into practice.
Each doctor is paired with an experienced GP mentor who is independent of their employing practice. This creates a confidential and supportive environment where doctors can openly discuss challenges, ask questions, seek advice, and gain valuable insights from a trusted colleague.
Building Confidence in a New Healthcare Environment
Relocating to a new country and adapting to a different healthcare system comes with a learning curve. Having access to an experienced mentor can make all the difference.
Mentors are available to support doctors with:
- Clinical questions and case discussions
- Practical aspects of Irish general practice
- Navigating day-to-day challenges
- Professional development and career progression
- Building confidence and settling into a new role
All mentors have completed dedicated mentorship training and play an important role in helping new colleagues feel supported throughout their journey within Centric Health.
